Internship Description: We are seeking one student for a summer internship that offers an opportunity to work with an environmental and agricultural nonprofit organization, the Harry R. Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology. The Hughes Center is affiliated with the University of Maryland College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and is located at the Wye Research and Education Center in Queenstown, Maryland. This internship is based online with occasional in-person meetings (at least two but up to four in-person meetings throughout the eight-week internship).
This internship focuses on communications and outreach, specifically with an eye on social media and email marketing. The intern will work on Maryland’s agricultural and environmental issues and learn to communicate messages on scientific topics to lay audiences. This internship will provide the opportunity to learn and practice various aspects of public outreach, media relations, content distribution and analytics. The chosen intern will work directly with the Hughes Center’s communications coordinator to develop online outreach plans for the Center’s research and projects.
Duties and expectations:
- Social media outreach and plan development: The intern will lead an effort to develop a social media strategy for the Hughes Center, including content planning and creation, calendar development and follower growth plans.
- Email Marketing: The intern will have the opportunity to gain experience with the email marketing service, Constant Contact, and work within it to develop messages, organize audiences and build outreach efforts.
- Media Outreach: The intern will have an opportunity to learn best practices for media outreach and gain valuable experience pitching stories and facilitating interviews.
Salary: $16.30
